Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance – people before planes

60 Reasons to Protest: Reason #39 – How’s the serenity?

The Queensland Government has announced Northshore Hamilton as the location for the main athlete village for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The athletes’ village will host more than 10,000 athletes and team officials for the Olympic Games and more than 5,000 for the Paralympics. It is in the direct firing line of the New Parallel Runway.

And this week, Brisbane Lord Mayor (and keen amateur pilot) Adrian Schrinner has renewed his calls to turn the abandoned quarantine centre in Pinkenba at the very tip of Brisbane Airport’s Legacy runway to be used as a crisis and emergency accommodation hub to house people experiencing homelessness or escaping domestic violence situations.

As we all know from our own lived experience, these locations are entirely unsuitable for either purpose. Neither DV victims, rough sleepers, nor athletes trying to train, concentrate, rest and sleep in preparation for the Games, should be subjected to the extreme noise torture in those locations.

Decisions and ideas like these demonstrate just how out of touch with the problem of aircraft noise pollution our elected decision makers in this city are… we don’t deserve unsustainable aircraft noise, nor do star athletes, nor do people in crisis.
