60 Reasons to Protest: Reason #50 – 110 flights an hour
Brisbane Airport’s aggressive growth trajectory is set to outstrip Sydney as Australia’s busiest airport and be on par with Hong Kong and Singapore. BAC aims for 50 million passengers by 2035 or sooner. That equates to 110 aircraft movements an hour.
We have updated our data analysis today. In the chart above you can clearly see the impact of the COVID-19 related travel restrictions in 2020. Brisbane Airport (blue line) is slowly recovering to its pre-COVID capacity. However, the old 52 aircraft movements an hour capacity was achieved with just 1 runway. Since July 2020, BAC has 2 runways and no restrictions in place whatsoever to stop it from doubling its capacity. So if you think the noise pollution is bad now, just imagine what it will be like when Brisbane Airport ramps up to 110 flights an hour.
Brisbane will outperform Sydney Airport (orange). While Sydney has 3 runways, it is also properly regulated by a federally legislated curfew, demand management, a Long Term Operating Plan (LTOP) and a movement cap of 80 flights an hour.
Do you want BAC to turn our once liveable city into a noise sewer Aerotropolis?
